What Are the Best AI SEO Tracking Tools for Small Businesses?
The direct answer to the question people actually ask, plus the tools worth knowing and the measurement caveat nobody sells you.

The question people actually ask, more than any other, is this one: what is the best platform for tracking progress during an AI SEO project? The direct answer is below, followed by the tools worth knowing and the one thing every buyer gets wrong.
Last reviewed 3 August 2026.
The short answer
If you want one tool and you are a small business, start with a dedicated AI-visibility tracker rather than a classic SEO suite with an AI module bolted on. The two categories measure different things, and only one of them tells you whether a model names your brand.
Tracking prompts on a small budget: Rankscale.ai, because pay-as-you-go pricing means you can test before committing.
You already pay for a full SEO suite: use Semrush or SE Ranking's AI features and do not buy a second tool yet.
Getting pages discovered quickly: Indexly, which solves indexing. That is a separate problem from visibility.
You want the tracking done for you alongside the work: that is what we do at Index Lab, and the disclosure below says so plainly.
Why a normal rank tracker cannot answer this question
A rank tracker tells you what position a URL holds for a keyword. AI visibility does not work that way. There is no stable ranking to hold.
A July 2026 critical survey of 45 studies in this field described AI visibility as a stochastic, partially observable pipeline. The same prompt asked twice can return different brands. Citation overlap between platforms sits below 20%, so being named by ChatGPT tells you very little about Gemini. And Ahrefs found in March 2026 that only 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews appear in the top ten organic results, down from around 76% in July 2025, with 31% not ranking in the top 100 at all.
That last figure is the one to sit with. Your Google rankings have stopped predicting your AI citations. If your reporting is still a rankings dashboard, it is measuring a proxy that has decoupled from the outcome.
The five things a tracking tool needs to do
Track named prompts over time. Keyword positions are the wrong unit here. You want to know how often "best babysitting service in Lisbon" returns your brand, run repeatedly, so you can see a trend.
Cover more than one model. Cross-platform overlap is under 20%, so a single-model tool gives you a fifth of the picture.
Show which sources the model cited. This is the actionable part, because it tells you which third-party pages to go and influence.
Separate AI referral traffic from organic in your analytics. Most AI referrals arrive without a detectable referrer and land in Direct, so this needs deliberate setup.
Report sentiment, or at least how your brand is characterised. Being named badly is a different problem from being absent.
What the buyers of these tools get wrong
Two mistakes come up in almost every conversation we have about tooling.
Treating a tool as the strategy

See how visible your brand is in AI
Ask AI the questions your customers ask, and find out if you show up.
A tracker measures. It does not move anything. The most common pattern we see is a small business paying for visibility monitoring for six months, watching a flat line, and concluding that AI search does not work for their category. The tool was working correctly. Nothing had been changed for it to detect.
Buying on llms.txt support
Several platforms advertise llms.txt checks as an AI-search feature. Ahrefs examined server logs across 137,210 domains in June 2026 and found 97% of published llms.txt files received zero requests during May 2026. Of the 3% that saw any traffic, AI retrieval bots made up 1.1%. Google's John Mueller has compared it to the keywords meta tag. A tool that leads with llms.txt support is telling you something about how current its thinking is.
The tools worth knowing in 2026
1. Index Lab (disclosure: this is us)
We are a service rather than software, so we do not belong in a like-for-like feature comparison with the tools below. We include ourselves for one reason: most small businesses asking this question do not want another dashboard to log into. They want the visibility to improve and a monthly report explaining what moved. Tracking is part of every package. If you would rather buy software and run it yourself, the rest of this list is the honest place to look.
Our results are published with named clients: a Dubai restaurant that doubled delivery orders in three months (Wandr), an express facial clinic fully booked on opening day (Flash Facial), and a childcare marketplace that reached first place on ChatGPT in forty days (Baby Sisters).
2. Rankscale.ai
A dedicated generative engine optimisation platform that tracks visibility for specific prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and others. Competitor benchmarking, sentiment analysis and source-citation analysis are the useful parts. Pay-as-you-go credits start around a $20 one-off purchase with no subscription, which makes it the lowest-risk way to find out whether you have a visibility problem at all. Best for testing before you commit budget.
3. Semrush
An all-in-one marketing platform with AI SEO capability across its toolkit, tracking brand presence in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity alongside conventional position tracking in AI Overviews. Pricing starts around $139.95 a month. Best if you already need the full SEO suite, since the AI features arrive as part of a platform you were buying anyway. Buying it purely for AI visibility is expensive next to a dedicated tracker.
4. SE Ranking
A more affordable full-suite option with AI search tracking included. The company also publishes its own research on AI search, including a November 2025 study of 300,000 domains, which is a reasonable signal that the team measures the space first-hand. Best for agencies and multi-site owners who need conventional SEO tooling with AI tracking alongside.
5. Surfer SEO
Content-focused optimisation with real-time scoring, plus an AI Tracker that monitors brand mentions across AI platforms. Pricing starts around $99 a month. Best for content-heavy businesses where the blog is the acquisition channel, since the optimisation and the tracking sit in one workflow.
6. Indexly
Indexly automates indexing. Visibility tracking is outside its scope. It watches your sitemap and submits new or unindexed pages, and it addresses the "crawled, not indexed" problem. Pricing starts around $14 a month. Worth including because indexing is a genuine prerequisite: a page that is not indexed cannot be cited. Best for new sites and stores publishing frequently.
7. Writesonic
An end-to-end AI content platform with SEO data integrations and brand-voice training, with a free plan and paid plans from around $49 a month. Best if you need content production and light tracking from one place.
8. Profound, Scrunch and the enterprise tier
A category of enterprise AI-visibility platforms exists above everything listed here, priced accordingly. They are genuinely more capable at scale. They are also, for most small businesses, several times the cost of simply doing the work. Mentioned so you know the category exists when someone quotes you enterprise pricing.
How to choose in one table
Your situation | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
Testing whether you have a problem at all | Rankscale.ai | Pay-as-you-go, no subscription commitment |
Already paying for an SEO suite | Semrush or SE Ranking AI features | Avoid paying twice for overlapping tooling |
Blog is your main acquisition channel | Surfer SEO | Optimisation and tracking in one workflow |
New site, pages not getting indexed | Indexly | Indexing is a prerequisite for citation |
You want the outcome delivered | A managed service | Tracking alone changes nothing |
Enterprise, multi-market, large catalogue | Profound, Scrunch and similar | Built for scale, priced for it |
The measurement caveat nobody sells you
Every tool in this list, including our own instrumentation, measures AI visibility by querying models through APIs. A real person using ChatGPT while logged in, with memory, a location and a conversation history, is in a meaningfully different context. So treat all of these numbers as a directional index of presence and share of voice over time. Be sceptical of any vendor selling you a ranking position inside ChatGPT, because that is not a thing the product exposes.
Google Search Console added generative-AI performance reporting on 3 June 2026, which gives you impressions from AI surfaces. It reports no clicks, no CTR, no position and no query breakdown, so it confirms you appeared without telling you what it earned. Use it as corroboration alongside a tracker.
Where to start if you have no budget
Write down the ten questions a customer would ask an assistant before buying what you sell. Ask each of them in ChatGPT and Gemini, once a week, and record whether you are named. That is a manual version of every tool on this list and it costs nothing. If your name never comes up, you have your answer and you can spend the tool budget on fixing it instead.
If you would rather see it done properly against your real market, our free visibility check runs the same thing for you.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best SEO platform for tracking progress during an AI SEO project?+
It depends on your situation. To test whether you have a visibility problem at all, Rankscale.ai is the lowest-risk starting point because it is pay-as-you-go with no subscription. If you already pay for Semrush or SE Ranking, use their AI features rather than buying a second tool. If you want the visibility to improve, a managed service does the tracking as part of the work.
How are AI SEO tracking tools different from normal rank trackers?+
A rank tracker reports the position of a URL for a keyword. AI visibility has no stable ranking to report: the same prompt can return different brands on repeat runs, and citation overlap between platforms is below 20%. Ahrefs found in March 2026 that only 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews appear in the organic top ten, so rankings have stopped predicting citations.
Do I need a tool that supports llms.txt?+
No. Ahrefs analysed server logs across 137,210 domains in June 2026 and found 97% of published llms.txt files received zero requests during May 2026, with AI retrieval bots accounting for 1.1% of traffic to the 3% that saw any. A tool leading with llms.txt support is a signal about how current its thinking is.
Can I track AI visibility for free?+
Yes, manually. Write down the ten questions a customer would ask an assistant before buying from you, ask each in ChatGPT and Gemini once a week, and record whether your brand is named. That is a manual version of what these tools automate.
