Google Ads is testing a loading animation on mobile search that shows "Evaluating sponsored results" with the Google and Gemini logos before the ads appear. The design mimics how an AI Overview loads in, except the header still reads "sponsored results."

Sachin Patel spotted the test and posted a screenshot, and it also came up in forum discussion on X. Search Engine Roundtable asked Google about it directly.
What Google says is actually happening
Google told SER this is a small experiment and that Gemini is not doing anything with the ads. A spokesperson said: "This is a small experiment where we signal to users that content is loading. We are not using Gemini to load sponsored results within Google Search."
Asked why the Gemini logo shows up if Gemini isn't involved, Google said it is testing several loading animations, some with the Gemini logo and some without, purely to signal that content is loading and that AI features exist on the page. Nothing about how ads are selected or evaluated has changed.
The line that's actually moving
That leaves a gap between the visual and the mechanical. Google's explanation is that the Gemini branding is cosmetic, not a signal that a model is now grading sponsored results the way it grades AI Overview content. But reusing the same loading pattern, the same logos, and language like "evaluating" on paid placements is still a design choice, and for a moment it makes a sponsored result look like an AI-generated answer.
The interface is shifting toward one shared visual language for organic AI answers and paid ones. According to Google, on the record, the ad-evaluation mechanics behind it are not.
For anyone running Google Ads, the fact to act on is the denial, not the animation: ad serving is unchanged for now. Worth watching whether this test expands, and whether the next version drops the disclaimer.
