Google says Search and AI Mode are now one product, and agents come next

Google told investors on its Q3 2026 earnings call that AI Overviews, AI Mode and traditional Search are becoming one product. Sundar Pichai said: "We are building one seamless experience across AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Traditional Search." Philipp Schindler described "a unified product spanning traditional results and AI powered Search." Search Engine Journal's write-up, by Marie Haynes, reads the call as Google's clearest move yet toward agentic search.

What Google said
Alphabet revenue was up 25% year on year, and Cloud revenue was up 103%.
Search advertising grew 12% year on year. Wall Street expected 15%. Search Engine Journal says the main worry is that AI Mode has fewer places to show ads.
Schindler said the plan is to put user experience and engagement first, then scale ad formats.
Pichai said the Gemini app now has one billion users.
Agentic features started in Gemini Enterprise. Schindler said bringing them to Search is the "next step".
On the same day Google announced the Connected Apps Platform. Gemini can use apps through MCP, either in the Gemini app or from inside Search. Google's example was a user calling @Peloton to bring the Peloton app into an agentic flow. Businesses can apply to join.
Why the product line matters more than the ad miss
The ad miss got the headlines. For anyone selling something, the product statement matters more. If Google runs AI answers and blue links as one surface, AI search is no longer a separate project to plan for later. It is Search.
The agent plans make this sharper. Six months ago Pichai said "Search will be an agent manager." More queries will end with an answer or an action, and fewer with a list of sites to visit. A business can show up in two ways: as the content the AI picks and cites, or as the tool the agent uses.
What the call leaves open
The source does not say how Google will choose which connected app an agent calls. It does not say whether answers inside agentic flows will carry links, or whether site owners will get separate reporting for AI Mode. The only timeline it gives for agents in Search is "next step". It also describes a product decision. It does not say Google has changed how it reports these surfaces in its results.
What to do now
Write content that is worth citing. Google's own AI optimization guidance favours original, first-hand material over summaries of what already exists.
If customers can book, order or get a quote from you, check whether that function fits the Connected Apps Platform.
Track whether you are named in AI answers alongside your rankings. Both now sit on the same surface.
