How to Make Your Business Appear in AI Search Engines

Five steps, in order: let AI crawlers in, get indexed on Google and Bing, write pages an answer can quote, earn credibility on other sites, and measure each engine on its own.

To make your business appear in AI search engines, let the crawlers that feed AI answers reach your pages, get those pages into both Google's and Bing's index, write your key facts in plain text an answer can lift, earn mentions on sites the engines trust, and measure each engine on its own. The first two are the cheapest fixes and the ones most often broken.

Open the door to AI crawlers

One line in robots.txt can take you out of an engine. OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that block OAI-SearchBot are left out of ChatGPT search answers and can only still appear as navigational links. Blocking GPTBot is a different decision: it tells OpenAI not to train on your content and leaves search alone.

Googlebot is the crawler behind AI Overviews and AI Mode, and the Google-Extended token in Google's crawler overview has no say over either. CDN bot controls can block search crawlers too; our Cloudflare walkthrough shows where to look. And keep key facts in the HTML: in a December 2024 study by Vercel and MERJ, the major AI crawlers apart from Google's did not run JavaScript.

Get indexed on Google and Bing

Every AI answer that cites the web retrieves from an index, so the index is the entry ticket. Google's AI optimization guide, updated in July 2026, says a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet before it can appear in AI features. Pages set to noindex or blocked from snippets are out.

Most businesses neglect Bing. OpenAI launched ChatGPT search on third-party search providers, a role Bing has long filled, and Bing's index also feeds Microsoft Copilot. A page missing from Bing loses Copilot and weakens its chances in ChatGPT at once. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and switch on IndexNow so Bing hears about every new and changed URL.

Write pages an answer can quote

Next, give answers something to lift. A study of 602 prompts and 21,143 citations found that the pages AI engines lean on carry extractable evidence: definitions, numerical facts, comparisons and procedural steps. Open each page with the direct answer, then back it with specifics only you hold: prices, service areas, what is included, how long it takes.

Write those facts as visible text. In a test of 349 queries, JSON-LD alone barely moved answer accuracy, while the same data as visible text raised it by about 29.6%. Google's guide agrees: no special schema.org markup is needed, and Google Search does not use llms.txt files. It asks for non-commodity content, the first-hand detail a competitor cannot copy. Our guide to structuring content for AI visibility goes deeper on layout.

Build credibility on other sites

When someone asks for the best option without naming a brand, the answer leans on what others have written. Bain's April 2026 analysis of about 500 million citations found that 89% of citations for prompts that name no brand came from third-party sources.

A careful customer checks the same places, so credibility with people and with AI comes from one effort. Ask happy customers for specific reviews on the platforms your category uses, get into the roundups and directories buyers read, give trade press something worth printing, and keep your name, category and description identical everywhere. Bought reviews put the whole profile at risk. If community threads matter in your market, read whether ChatGPT still cites Reddit first.

Measure it, engine by engine

A survey of 45 GEO studies puts cross-platform citation overlap below 20%, so a good week on ChatGPT says little about Gemini. Track each engine:

  • Google Search Console: the generative AI report shows impressions, pages, countries and devices, without clicks or the questions behind them.

  • Bing Webmaster Tools: AI Performance lists your grounding queries, and the Topics Portfolio adds queries where other sites are cited and yours is not. In Index Lab's own data for indexlab.ai, July to September 2026, 471 grounding queries, under 1% of citations came from questions about which agency to hire.

  • Prompt tracking: ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot your customers' real questions on a schedule and record who gets named.

  • Analytics: watch AI assistant referrals, knowing part of that traffic arrives with no referrer.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for a business to show up in AI search?+

Crawl and indexing fixes can show as soon as the engines recrawl your pages. Credibility on other sites builds over months.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?+

You can pay to appear beside them. ChatGPT Ads shows a labelled sponsored placement separate from the answer, and OpenAI lists answer independence among its ad principles. The mention inside the answer is earned.

Is optimising for AI search different from SEO?+

It builds on SEO. Crawl access, indexing and authority still decide whether you are eligible. AI search adds weight to mentions on other sites, quotable facts and per-engine tracking.
