OpenAI DevDay 2026 adds ranked plugin recommendations inside ChatGPT conversations

More than 20 announcements, and the recap describes no change to how ChatGPT searches, browses or cites. The new visibility slot goes to plugins, so software companies can compete for it and websites cannot.

OpenAI's DevDay 2026 recap lists more than 20 major announcements across ChatGPT, Codex, its models and the API. As described on the recap page, none of them concerns how ChatGPT searches the web, browses, or chooses which sources to cite.

If you track your brand's position in ChatGPT answers, that is the headline. Nothing in this release gives a reason to expect citation patterns to move. The change that matters is a plugin directory with ranking, plus recommendations that surface plugins inside conversations.

What OpenAI shipped on discovery

  • Developers can build plugins with a home in the sidebar, interactive panels and file viewers. Available to all plans.

  • "Improved ranking and recommendations help people find relevant plugins in the directory and in conversations," according to OpenAI.

  • Users choose which plugins to use and approve the access each one receives.

  • Shareable profiles let people showcase Sites and plugins that others can find and reuse.

  • OpenAI describes ChatGPT as a surface where developers can launch native experiences to its "collective 1.2B weekly users".

Why this is a second discovery surface

So far, visibility in ChatGPT has been about answers: which pages get cited and which brands get named. Plugin recommendations add a separate slot. When ChatGPT suggests a plugin mid-conversation, it is recommending a product that runs inside ChatGPT. A website cannot occupy that slot. A company that ships a plugin can.

That splits the market. Software companies with something useful to do inside a conversation now have a ranked placement to compete for. Publishers, local services and most ecommerce sites still compete only in the answer itself, and the recap describes no change there.

What the recap does not say

  • How plugin ranking works, or which signals it uses.

  • Whether plugin recommendations in conversations appear alongside cited web sources or displace them.

  • Whether GPT-6.1 Sol, the new model, changes retrieval behaviour. OpenAI's description covers agentic coding, computer use and professional work, and says nothing about search.

The recap summarises the whole event. Individual product pages may carry detail it leaves out, and we will update this post if any of them change the picture on search.

What to do

If you sell software, read the plugin submission documentation now. Directory ranking is new and OpenAI has not published its signals, so the useful work this month is to build, submit and watch where you land.

If you run a website, keep measuring your citation share in ChatGPT answers the way you already do. This event gives you no reason to expect it to shift.
