Organic search still sends more traffic than AI platforms combined, Shopify data shows

Search Engine Land's outlook on SEO for 2027 leans on a Shopify analysis published in August: AI-referred sessions to merchant storefronts grew 197% year over year in Q2, and organic search still sent more traffic than every tracked AI platform combined.

What Shopify found

  • AI-referred storefront sessions grew 197% year over year in Q2.

  • Organic search grew 12% on a much larger base and still sent more total traffic than all tracked AI platforms combined.

  • Shoppers arriving via AI converted at roughly twice the rate of organic visitors in research-heavy categories.

  • In taste-led categories, AI brought in about 1.3 times more first-time customers, even though organic remained the bigger discovery channel there.

  • Shopify's CTO, Mikhail Parakhin, said AI-referred sessions roughly tripled while organic search kept growing on a larger base.

Shopify didn't disclose how many merchants sit in the dataset, so the source treats these numbers as directional rather than definitive.

The actual argument

The source doesn't argue that SEO is dead. It argues that ranking a blue link is no longer the whole job. Author Adam Tanguay says brand visibility now depends on how AI systems describe and cite a company across Google, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Grok, Claude and Perplexity, plus the community platforms those models pull from: Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn.

His fix is to sort a keyword list into three buckets. Queries that still lead to a click, like comparison, pricing or implementation searches. Answer-only queries an AI system resolves without one, like definitions and "what is" posts. And community-owned queries like "has anyone used X", which a synthesized answer struggles to fake because they need a named person who actually used the product.

The move he recommends: stop writing thin pages for the middle bucket, since a 2,000-word "what is" post is exactly what AI Overviews resolve without sending a click. Put the production budget into the first and third buckets instead.
