OpenAI puts paid display ads next to ChatGPT image generation results
A US test starts later this month with an initial group of advertisers. Image results give brands no organic way in, so this ChatGPT surface is paid only.

OpenAI will show visual display ads next to the images users ask ChatGPT to generate, TechCrunch reported on October 5. The ads start later this month. They are US only and come from an initial test group of advertisers.

What was announced
Display ads appear alongside image generation results. They are clearly labeled, and OpenAI says they won't influence the answers ChatGPT provides.
The ads are US only for now, from an initial test group of advertisers.
Click attribution partners: AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin.
Full-funnel measurement partners: Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL.
Geo-based experiments run with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic.
Brand suitability evaluation pilots are in progress with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science.
A surface you can only buy
Most AI visibility work goes into text answers: getting a brand cited, named or recommended. Image prompts have nothing like that. When someone asks ChatGPT for a picture, they get a newly generated image. There are no sources and no brand list for you to earn a place in. As far as we can see, that makes the ad slot beside it the first ChatGPT surface where the only way for a brand to appear is to pay for it.
This splits the work for a marketing team. Text answers stay an organic channel that you shape with content and citations. Image results are a media buy, so plan and measure them like one.
The partner list is the tell
The test is small. The measurement setup around it is not. It includes the attribution vendors that performance teams already run, incrementality and geo testing, and the brand safety verifiers that large advertisers expect before they commit budget. OpenAI is building what it needs to sell this at volume. TechCrunch adds that the ads will eventually reach ChatGPT's 1.2 billion weekly users once they roll out globally.
What we do not know
How the ads are targeted. The source does not say whether the image prompt itself decides which ad appears.
Pricing, how advertisers buy, and when the rollout widens.
What "won't influence the answers" means when the answer is a generated image.
What to do
If you sell in a visual category, check whether your current attribution vendor is on the list. If it is, measuring a test will need very little new setup. Then plan image placements as paid inventory with their own budget line, kept separate from your organic AI visibility work.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the new ChatGPT visual ads appear?+
Alongside images that users ask ChatGPT to generate, according to TechCrunch. They are clearly labeled.
When and where do the ads launch?+
Later this month, in the US only, with products and services from an initial test group of advertisers. OpenAI has not given a date for a global rollout.
Can a brand appear in ChatGPT image results without paying?+
Not in any route we can see. A generated image has no citations or brand list to earn a place in, so the ad slot is the only way to be visible there.
Do the ads change what ChatGPT generates?+
OpenAI says the ads won't influence the answers ChatGPT provides. The source does not explain how that applies to image results.
Which measurement partners can advertisers use?+
Click attribution through AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin, and full-funnel measurement through Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL. Haus, Measured and WorkMagic support geo-based experiments.
