Product pages beat Reddit for AI citations, but the data is B2B only

Ten Speed's study found product pages draw 24.1% of AI citations against 4.2% for Reddit, YouTube and forums combined, and the number survived six fact-check questions. The dataset behind it is B2B SaaS and professional services clients only.

Ten Speed pulled 7,387 AI citation appearances from Peec AI, a tool that tracks how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini cite URLs in their answers, across 170 buyer-stage prompts run against its own clients in fintech, physical security, hospitality and IT automation, plus lookalike competitors.

The split

  • Product pages: 24.1% of citations, the largest single category

  • Articles (blog posts, news, PR): 17.4%

  • Comparison pages and listicles: around 13% each

  • How-to guides: just under 9%

  • Homepages: 7.8%

  • Directory profiles (G2, Capterra): 7.2%

  • Reddit, YouTube, forums and discussion threads combined: 4.2%, with Reddit doing most of that and YouTube around 1%

Brand-controlled content, the pages a marketing team writes and owns, added up to 88.3% of everything the four models cited. Comparison pages did the most with the least: they were 20% of the prompt set but pulled close to 27% of citations, a 1.33 times return.

What survived six questions

Search Engine Journal sent Ten Speed six pointed questions before running the story. A published chart said 220 prompts where every other chart used 170; Ten Speed confirmed 170 is correct and said the chart would be fixed. A comparison-category count tagged two different ways in two charts was reconciled to 34 prompts. Ten Speed declined to give even a range for how many client brands sit behind the 7,387 citations, citing confidentiality. And the headline 4% versus 24% split was never statistically tested. Ten Speed told SEJ it is a descriptive finding, unlike other citation-rate comparisons in the same study that did run through nonparametric tests.

Who this actually applies to

Ten Speed's client base is B2B SaaS and professional services. The company told SEJ that consumer and ecommerce brands could see something different entirely, and it did not collect a per-platform breakdown, so whether ChatGPT and Gemini treat Reddit the same way is still unknown.

For a B2B software seller, the move is real: rewrite product pages and homepages for a model reading them cold, and stop treating comparison pages as a battlecard nobody budgets for. For a D2C or ecommerce brand, this study has nothing to say, and Reddit's role there is still open.

Frequently asked questions

Does this study cover ecommerce or D2C brands?+

No. Ten Speed told Search Engine Journal that its dataset only covers its own B2B SaaS and professional services clients, and that consumer or ecommerce brands could see something different entirely.

How many prompts did Ten Speed actually use?+

170. A published chart said 220, but Ten Speed confirmed 170 is the correct figure after Search Engine Journal flagged the mismatch.

Was the 24% versus 4% split statistically tested?+

No. Ten Speed said it is a descriptive finding, not one it ran through the nonparametric tests it used elsewhere in the study.
