Reddit's ChatGPT citation share falls 86% in days, cause still unconfirmed

Promptwatch clocked Reddit's ChatGPT citation share falling from 3.8% to 0.5% between August 14 and 17. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode saw much smaller declines over the same window, and OpenAI says it hasn't changed how it treats the site.

Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell from 3.8% to 0.5% in a matter of days, an 86% drop, according to AI visibility tracker Promptwatch, cited by Semrush.

Promptwatch measured Reddit holding a steady 3.8% share of ChatGPT citations from July 18 through August 7. Between August 14 and 17, that share averaged 0.5%.

The timeline splits into two parts. Promptwatch recorded a change in how ChatGPT Search fans out queries on August 8, and Reddit's share started sliding from there. The steep fall came later, on August 14, and Promptwatch says it doesn't yet know what caused that move. The company calls the size of the drop provisional and says it can't rule out a problem in its own data collection. OpenAI told Yahoo Tech it doesn't set a fixed visibility level for individual sites and that ChatGPT still cites Reddit.

Why this looks concentrated on ChatGPT

Reddit's citation share also fell in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode over the same window, but by 11% and 31%. Both are far shallower than the 86% drop on ChatGPT, which points to something specific to how ChatGPT is handling Reddit rather than a shift across AI search generally.

That distinction matters because this has happened before. Semrush's own study of more than 230,000 prompts found a similar collapse a year earlier: ChatGPT's Reddit citations fell from about 60% of responses in early August 2025 to roughly 10% by mid-September. Kevin Indig traced that drop to Google removing its num=100 search parameter, not to any change OpenAI made. A platform-specific number can still have a cause that sits outside that platform.

What it means if you were counting on Reddit

Brands that leaned on Reddit SEO for ChatGPT visibility just watched that channel's payoff get a lot less predictable. Brands exposed to unflattering Reddit threads surfacing in ChatGPT answers get less of that exposure for now.

None of this changes what Reddit is for. Reddit's chief communications officer, Adam Collins, said Reddit's value is in the conversations happening on it today, not in where those conversations surface tomorrow. Semrush also raises an open question worth tracking: whether Reddit has shifted earlier in ChatGPT's process, used to help the model identify brands before it runs more scoped searches, rather than disappearing from the pipeline.

Frequently asked questions

Did OpenAI confirm it changed how it treats Reddit?+

No. OpenAI told Yahoo Tech it doesn't set a fixed visibility level for individual sites and that ChatGPT still cites Reddit.

Is this the first time ChatGPT's Reddit citations have collapsed?+

No. Semrush's own study of more than 230,000 prompts found a similar drop a year earlier, from about 60% of responses in early August 2025 to roughly 10% by mid-September, which Kevin Indig attributed to Google removing its num=100 search parameter, not to OpenAI.

Did Reddit's visibility drop across all AI platforms?+

It looks concentrated on ChatGPT. Reddit's citation share fell 11% in Google's AI Overviews and 31% in AI Mode over the same period, both far shallower than the 86% drop on ChatGPT.
